The O'Shaughnessy style is deemed the best all-purpose type, and many variations are available. This style has a small eye turned perpendicular to the bend and point, and with the shank bent a little forward. Variations include the baitholder, with the small points at the shank to hold the soft bait; and snelled hooks with turned-in or -out eyes, sold with short leaders already tied. Weedless hooks are those with a short piece of wire from the eye to the point, to ward off weeds and other water debris from lodging in the hook bend or point. Weedless hooks are mostly used in fishing water with thick vegetation, either with bait or as flyhook. Many hooks can be rigged weedless, though.
Trebles are three hooks welded into one, commonly used in lures, from crankbaits through trolling lures to diamond jigs. A treble hook is usually attached to the lure via a split ring to give it free play, although some use hook eyes. Trebles can be effective also in certain fly designs, especially those that are made to resemble octopuses or squids.
Fish hooks also come in several types. Knowing a few of the more popular ones and their uses can help you be successful:
A common misconception is that small trout hooks (size 8 to 12) aren't large enough to hook and land large trout. This is simply not true. Very large trout can and are hooked and landed using trout fishing hooks that are quite small. If you don't believe me, just ask any seasoned fly fisherman. Flea flickers have to use hooks that are very small to match certain hatches. Just as a reference, I regularly hook and land trout in the 3-5 pound range using size 10 gang hooks. When it comes to trout fishing hooks in most instances smaller is better.
One of the first and definitive moves that the authorities made in their policy towards sport fishing for billfish in Guatemala was the early adoption of circle hooks, and the banning of "J" type hooks for conventional fishing. This policy combined with a strict ban on killing billfish within the territorial waters of Guatemala has resulted in a renowned and sustainable billfish fishery off the Pacific Coast of Guatemala.
Circle hooks have rapidly gained popularity over the recent years. These hooks are characterized by their similarities to the letter G. Circle hooks can be very effective when targeting fish species with sharp teeth, as they are designed to set in the corner of the mouth, away from any line chewing teeth. This type of hook can become quite expensive, as many come laser sharpened to increase their effectiveness. The disadvantage of this type of bait hook is that it is extremely difficult to pin your bait on a circle hook and should be used mostly for fishing with big baits.
